Isla

by Jim Pollard

Losing a child is every mother’s nightmare. But must it define her?

Isla needs to share her secret before it kills her.

When shy student Isla Shaw meets nihilistic ‘Doctor’ John Palmer, the repercussions ripple and ring. A lone child, she becomes a lone mother crashing through work, relationships and rent.

Isla moves from gritty London to bohemian Paris but the place she really lives, like so many of us, is inside her head – she calls it the 21st arrondissement. Adrift in films and books, drink and drugs, and therapy, wherever Isla looks for answers, the questions that she uncovers are always the same:

What does love really mean? What is a ‘good’ mother?

Answering these will take her – and us – all around the 21st arrondissement, in and out of its darkest corners and grimmest alleyways. And all within the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Isla needs to share her secret before it kills her.
